“King of the Arctic”

On 4th Mar 20244th Mar 2024 By JoanaIn BiologyLeave a comment

Welcome back to Bio On The Rocks. The 27th of February, International Polar Bear Day, provided the perfect occasion to dedicate a post to the "King of the Arctic". In my first blog post about the safety course, I mentioned that many had "warned" me about the polar bears. I was often asked, half-jokingly, "Did …

“The Stormy Sun and the Northern Lights”

Welcome back to Bio On The Rocks. The past days and weeks have been very eventful. Now that the sun is back, it not only lures students more into nature but also more and more tourists to the island. Some people had warned me about the darkness that awaited me when I arrived in Svalbard …

“Me being under the rocks!”

Welcome back to Bio On The Rocks. Actually, the next post in the series would be about meiofauna, a topic we have now also covered at UNIS. After having reported on the smallest living organisms (plankton and ice algae), it would be time to discuss the next larger ones – and such an article will …

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Bio On The Rocks! After writing about the tiny organisms living in, on, under, and next to sea ice last week, and with this covering a topic that fits perfectly with Bio On The Rocks, I thought it was time to talk a little about what BOTRi, as I …

“Let’s dive deeper”

On 5th Feb 20245th Apr 2024 By JoanaIn Biology, ScienceLeave a comment

Welcome back. Today, we will delve into a topic that couldn't be more fitting for Bio On The Rocks. Last week, I wrote a lot about the loss of sea ice and how humans can deal with the dangers that come with it. Today, I want to dive deeper into the science and bring you …

☀️🏔️Summer has arrived in the Arctic – and with it, the birds. ✨ Just a little reminder 🙃mindset shifts to take the fear out of your next scientific decision I spotted my first oystercatchers on Helgoland and was beyond excited! 🐦 Rick had already seen some in Scotland and showed me pictures — I was honestly a bit jealous. They don’t migrate to Svalbard, so I couldn’t find them up there. But as it turns out, they are everywhere in Bremerhaven too, even nesting on top of tall buildings! Such charming little birds! 🩵 🧊Field trip to Hiddensee – hunting for glacial treasures 🪨 Explore. That’s the whole point. 🌍 🤔Still thinking about which natural science path is right for you?
Today I was at Pohlesee – a small lake near Berlin, connected to the Wannsee – for a workshop 📖. I had dragged my big telephoto lens across Germany 📷 and was this close to admitting it had been for nothing.
But then… this absolute legend of a grey heron showed up. Calm, collected, and posing like it had done this a hundred times before 🐦. Just when it started to rain … he got a little unmotivated. ✨April was a month spent mostly @awiexpedition Institute 🧪 – working on Arctic microfossils from my sediment core samples and learning from every pipette and protocol. But this post isn’t about thesis life or labwork. It’s about the living beings I shared the most time with – and the most beautiful moments.
